ACTIVITIES Based on itinerary

It makes a perfect addition to a trip in Uganda, etc. In just 4 days you can explore Rwanda, which offers great hiking trips, nature and relaxing. There are less animals here and also less driving compared to Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. For many that is a great tradeoff after the longer days in the car!

Our top places to explore in Rwanda:
• Nyungwe (Nature)
• Ruhengeri/Musanze/Volcanoes National Park
• Akagera National Park
• Gishenyi
• Kigali City – explore the capital of Rwanda

Common add-ons:
• Travel to Goma, Congo to hike the biggest active volcano in the world – Nyiragongo
• Continue in to/from Tanzania
• Continue in to/from Uganda on multiple trips, including but not limited to Gorilla Tour, 14+ Day Best of Uganda, and Queen Elizabeth and Fort Portal

In case one wants to carry on the Tanzania we can go after Rwanda or just from Uganda to Bukoba and then start Tanzania after. Below is the Tanzania itinerary of 10 days but we can also do less days depending on you or even more.

1

Day 1

Pick up at airport or hotel. Enjoy a city tour of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Kigali is known for its cleanliness and organization, a nice change from many African cities. The tour would include a visit to the main genocide memorial center, the Kigali Memorial Center, as well as a 2 hour visit of the community at the iby’iwacu cultural village for a great performance. After the tour we’d then drive northwest through rolling hills and valleys to Virungas Volcanoes National Park (Parc des Volcans). Enjoy a relaxing evening before tomorrow’s primate adventure.

2

Day 2

Gorilla day! Up for breakfast at 6:30 am, you’d grab your packed lunch and get to the departing point by 8 am. Here you join other trekkers (8 max) for a briefing on gorilla trekking by your guide/ranger. Each group has a guide, an armed ranger and porters. While the time it takes to track these shy giants varies from a few minutes to several hours, chances of not finding the gorillas are very slim. In fact, by the time you start the trek, your guide/ranger has an idea of where to find them using his knowledge of gorilla movements and their known location the day before. When you finally locate your gorilla group, a maximum of one hour is allowed to observe and photograph the gorillas.

After the thrilling gorilla experience, you return to the hotel to relax.  (Note, if you want to return to Kigali this is also possible.)

3

Day 3

Drive from Volcanoes National Park south towards Nyungwe, home to many primate species including chimps, l’hoest monkeys, red tailed monkeys, many vervet monkeys, grey cheeked mangabeys, olive baboons and plant species like the common igishigishi.   At 3 pm we’ll have a briefing from the guide, pick our walking/hiking sticks, and start the days canopy walk in the rain forest (approx. 2 hrs).

4

Day 4

After breakfast we’ll begin our chimp tracking in the forest (approx. 1-2 hours). Afterwards you can visit the Kings Palace if you wish. Otherwise we begin the 5 hour drive back to Kigali where you can enjoy a night on the town before heading back out in to nature.

5

Day 5

Travel 2 hours from Kigali to Akagera National Park in the northeast corner of Rwanda. This park borders Tanzania and makes a great entry point in to a tour in Tanzania or Uganda via Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It has lots of animals including giraffes, buffaloes, topis, elephants, and zebras. Once we reach the park, you’ll immediately have a game drive en route to your boat ride on Lake Ihema where you’ll get a great view of Tanzania on the opposite shore.

6

Day 6

Up at 6 am for breakfast at 6:30, you’ll grab your packed lunch and jump in the car to begin your all day game drive. You’ll see lots of animals, especially from Mutumba hill over looking the Northern section of the park. This section of the park is filled with great acacia trees and a mixture of wooden and open savannah grasslands.

7

Day 7

If you’re up for it, get up early for another morning game drive. Afterwards we can return to Kigali or continue on in to Tanzania or Uganda via Bwindi (see Gorilla Tour and 7 Day Best of Uganda for sample itineraries).http://walterstours.com/tours/gorilla-tracking/
