At Walter’s Tours Ltd, we pride ourselves on being original, innovative and creative, especially when it comes to new developments in the tourism industry. In this way, we are one of the few tour companies to offer both city tours around home base of Kampala plus classic safari routes through all of East Africa. Even better, we are always on the hunt for new and better, so we’re not afraid to venture off the beaten track!

Our Top 5 Goals:

1. Excellent Service
We’re funny. We’re trained. We’re responsible. We’re connected. After 6 years, we know what we are doing and Walter himself still makes sure every itinerary is as accurate as we can make it. We have established and active relationships with many of the top hotels and lodges around the country, and we are able to secure bookings for accommodation, Gorilla passes, etc. in advance and sometimes at a reduced rate than you going it alone. We speak English, Swahili and Luganda. In addition, our office is open 6 days a week and we can be reached by phone, email or Facebook message.

2. Competitive Prices
Walter’s Tours Ltd. pioneered travel in Uganda. In 6 years we have become known for our excellent service at affordable prices. Today, we offer a range of tours to suit all budgets, group sizes, trip durations and desired experiences.

3. Training
Guides aren’t created just by hanging a sign outside your door. This takes years learning and watching. The industry is very competitive and every single tour is an opportunity for us to share and learn. We hire professionals and train potential. We invest a lot of energy, time, and money in to our operations. Walter personally trains every single guide and conducts annual performance reviews. Do not be fooled by amateurs.

4. Quality Vehicles
Whether motorbikes or 4×4, we focus on making sure our fleet is maintained, clean, and road ready. We also make sure our drivers can act as mechanics on the road. As everyone knows, safari trips are long and comfort is of the most importance! Our fleet is comprised of safari vans, 4WD Land Cruisers and RAV4 plus a variety of motorbikes (local models for city tours, adventure BMW, Honda BAJA’s, etc.).

5. Giving Back + Sustainable Tourism
Walter’s Tours has not only created local jobs (currently 25+ positions) but has also provided travelers to give back in sustainable and impactful ways. (No Saviour Barbie’s here!) You can read more about this here.

walterI was born and raised in southeastern Uganda. To be honest, my youth is a lot like other stories here in Africa: poor parents, raised by my loving grandparents, and learning the reality of life at a young age. My story is different than others, though, because I also learned that I would have to create my own future. Thankfully I’m what most people would consider a born entrepreneur. I started my first company at 8 years old, and managed to self-fund my own education after the death of my grandfather/caretaker. At 17, after graduating high school, I knew it was time to leave home and make a life for myself.

I first decided to try my luck in South Sudan. Life wasn’t easy, but I refused to give up. In those first 5 years I lived in South Sudan, Nairobi and Kampala and worked a few odd jobs, including house boy and pharmacy assistant. I also experienced homelessness a few times, making me even more focused on creating my own future on my own terms.

In 2009 I moved to Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Like many others, I found a way to rent a boda boda/motorcycle to earn some money while I was studying computer engineering.  Days were long. I’d attend classes during the day and work all night as a boda driver. My personality and responsibility meant I stood out in the ocean of boda drivers here in Kampala (much, much less than you see here today). I was also the first and only driver to carry 2 helmets in the city, so I was trusted faster than most.

Local expats started recommending me to all their friends. They knew I’d be on time, be clean, drive safely, and I’d have an extra helmet for them so they didn’t have to carry one (not easy when you are out bar hopping I tell you!). I quickly met so many people that, by 2010, I was overcapacity for private rides.

Meanwhile I was also busy organizing tours of Kampala on my boda for my expat clients. So many people would just come to Kampala and immediately leave on a 4×4, personal safari without even taking the time to explore one of East Africa’s most emerging and vibrant cities! It was high time there was an option for these travelers, so I stepped in and created Kampala Boda City Tours. Needless to say, the rest is history.

In 2010 I formalized the tour portion of my work and called it Walter’s Tours Ltd. This has since expanded in to the Kampala Boda Boda City Tour and East African safaris.

Even though we’re growing, I make a huge effort to make sure that all of my guides and drivers are fully trained and able to answer your questions. Safety is a huge priority for me, and I personally check my cars and my guides’ bikes to make sure they are road ready. I also read all feedback from my guests. It is because of you that I am able to employ so many people who can then support their children and family. Your money as a huge ripple effect here in Africa.  I have a personal goal to create 100 jobs by 2018. Your business and referrals mean I might make this dream a reality.

Thank you for your support. I don’t take any of this lightly, and am honored that you will choose us to travel with.

TEAM / STAFF

Behind Walters Tours Ltd is a team of amazing drivers, guides, office staff and one heck of a founder all committed to showing off the beauty and excitement of East Africa.

To make sure we are on giving back more than just money, we actively invest in the following efforts every single year:

• Staff training in tourism trends, changes, wildlife, etc.
• Financial literacy training. We want our team to use their money wisely so the next generation has a better chance than we’ve had.
• Health testing and education. This includes HIV, blood pressure, etc.
• Fitness Training. We have a running club and some of us are participating in the Kampala Marathon.  (Walter is a HUGE runner so don’t be surprised if you see him run past you on the tour!)
• Promotion from within. We find some of our best talent on the boda! Most of our current safari drivers are safari guides in training and also part of our boda team.

COMMUNITY

• Actively recruiting and training female boda and safari drivers/guides. Women are a HUGE part of our focus for 2017/2018.
• Mentoring local students and entrepreneurs. See Walter’s TEDx talks here.
• Supporting orphans of Kichwamba with clothing and mentoring. We are currently assisting one of the older ‘graduates’ with technical training and an office job.

Christmas 2016 Surprise for 60+ Ugandans, incl. Kichwamba orphans. FINALLY Ugandans got to experience their own country…Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth & Fort Portal!

• Collecting/Distributing clothing, etc. to needy parts of Uganda. We have a collection box at the office and have the luxury of being able to travel to remote parts of Uganda where these shoes, shirts, etc. are desperately needed.

ENVIRONMENT

• Actively pursuing a project to reduce the use of water bottles and plastic bags on our trips. It’s an uphill battle here in Africa, but we’re doing what we can to make small steps.
• Financial assistance to animal rights awareness groups, specifically David Sheldrick Trust (3 elephants in Kenya!) and the local USPCA (Ugandan Society for the Protection and Care of Animals). We MUST make sure our wildlife is here for our children and the diversity of our ecosystem.

Walter’s Tours Ltd. takes your safety very seriously. Walter himself started the trend over 6 years ago when he was the first boda in all of Kampala to carry two helmets.  Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we are no longer the only ones doing it, and we’re grateful for that.

For all our tours, including the signature Boda Boda Tour and all safaris, you are required to sign a hold harmless waiver.

• At the beginning of your trip you will be required to sign a hold harmless waiver. You MUST sign this in order to start the tour.

• Yes, we’d love to skip this step, but our lawyer would never let us hear the end of it. It’s short and sweet. In fact, here’s a photo of it.

BODA TOURS: All of our drivers carry 2 helmets and drive under 40 km/hr. Please read our Boda FAQs before booking.

SAFARIS: Make sure you read our FAQs and Terms & Conditions before booking.

• Did we mention it’s mandatory?  Well, it is 🙂
